A leading specialty apparel retailer with a strong presence across Western Canada is seeking a Senior Controller to oversee and enhance financial, accounting, and operational processes across the corporate office and store locations. Reporting to the CFO, this role requires a strategic thinker and proactive leader with extensive retail and inventory management experience to drive operational efficiency and support the company’s continued success.

Description

Accounting & Compliance

  • Develop and oversee the company’s strategic financial plan as a key member of the Executive Leadership team.
  • Manage month-end and year-end financial processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial statement preparation and reporting.
  • Prepare financial working papers, including cash flow projections, trial balances, and journal entries.
  • Manage the review engagement process with external advisors, ensuring compliance with deadlines and standards.
  • Monitor GST compliance, taxation processes, and liaise with CRA for audits and reviews.
  • Lead physical inventory counts, ensuring accurate valuations and oversight of large-scale inventory management.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate submission of tax payments and remittances.

Finance & Planning

  • Oversee the annual budgeting process and collaborate with Managers to develop key performance metrics (KPIs) and management reporting systems.
  • Analyze financial statements, present insights to senior management, and develop long-term capital plans.
  • Manage cash flow, anticipate borrowing needs, and maintain robust cash forecasting models.
  • Ensure all contractual agreements and debt covenants are met and manage commercial insurance coverage.
  • Supervise payroll processes, ensuring timely employee compensation and compliance with government remittances.

Information Systems & Technology

  • Collaborate on the development and maintenance of IT infrastructure, applications software, and hardware systems.
  • Lead initiatives to streamline and automate accounting, merchandising, and operational processes through technology.
  • Design and enforce robust internal controls to protect company assets and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Implement and manage ERP systems, workflows, and technology integrations across departments.
  • Conduct rolling tests of internal controls across store locations, e-commerce, head office, and warehouses.

Leadership & Process Improvement

  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement by evaluating policies, processes, and controls for efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Build and lead a high-performing financial team, fostering professional growth and development.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with internal stakeholders and external advisors.

Requirements

  • University degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
  • Professional accounting designation, preferably a Chartered Accountant (CA) designation.
  • 10+ years of progressively senior financial experience within mid-sized organizations, preferably in the retail or soft goods industry.
  • Strong proficiency in financial and ERP systems, including Microsoft Business Central, Microsoft Power BI, Sage 300, and ADP Workforce Now.
  • Experience overseeing information systems and technology initiatives, with a focus on process improvements and efficiency.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in an organized and timely fashion, with a proven track record of delivering on financial and technology projects.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to build and develop positive relationships with stakeholders, external advisors, and cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated team-building skills, including experience in goal setting, motivating, leading, and developing a high-performance team in both finance and technology.
